What Affects the Cost of a Replacement Car Key in DFW?

What to do right now if you’ve lost your car key

  1. Retrace your steps. Check pockets, bags, the car’s seats and floor, and anywhere you stopped today.
  2. Look for a spare. One at home, or with a family member or roommate, could save you the whole job.
  3. Don’t force anything. Prying at the door or the ignition can damage the lock and make the fix harder.
  4. Gather the basics. Your car’s year, make, and model, and where it’s parked. That’s what we ask for first.
  5. Call or text a mobile locksmith. We come to you, so you don’t have to move the car.

If you’ve lost your only car key, the first thing you want to know is the price. The honest answer is that there isn’t one number, because “a car key” can mean very different things. Here’s what changes the cost and the time, so you know what to expect when you call.

Why there’s no single price

A basic metal key and a push-to-start smart key are completely different jobs. The right price depends on your key, your car, and your situation. That’s why we tell you the cost before we start, after a couple of quick questions, instead of quoting a flat number that wouldn’t fit most vehicles.

The type of key your car uses

  • Basic metal key: no electronics inside, so it’s the simplest.
  • Transponder key: a chip in the head talks to your car, so the key has to be cut and programmed.
  • Flip or remote key: a folding blade with lock and unlock buttons built in.
  • Smart key (push-to-start fob): lets you start the car without putting a key in anything. It’s generally the most involved to program.

Why a hardware-store copy often won’t start your car

Most cars built since the late 1990s have a chip in the key. When you start the car, its computer checks for that chip’s code. If the code isn’t recognized, the engine won’t start, even when the key turns the lock. So a key that was only cut, and never programmed to your car, can unlock the door and still fail to start it. That’s why we do both: cut the key and program it, right where the car is parked.

Your car’s make, model, and year

Programming steps differ between manufacturers, and sometimes between model years of the same car. Some are quick. Others take more steps and more equipment. That’s why the first thing we ask is the year, make, and model.

Whether you still have a working key

Making a spare when you already have a working key is usually simpler than starting from scratch when every key is gone. If you’ve lost all your keys, tell us right away so we can plan for it.

Where you are and how soon you need us

We come to you, whether that’s a driveway, an office lot, or the side of the road. Where you’re parked and how urgent it is both matter when we plan the job, so mention them when you get in touch.

Dealership or mobile locksmith?

With a dealership, you generally have to get the car there, which can mean a tow if it won’t be driven, and you may need an appointment. A mobile locksmith comes to your car, so there’s no tow, no trip, and no waiting for a slot. We cut and program the key where the car is parked. See our car key services for what we do.

How to get an exact quote quickly

Text or call with:

  1. Your car’s year, make, and model
  2. Whether it uses a key in the ignition or a push-to-start button
  3. Whether you have any working key
  4. Where you’re parked

We’ll tell you the cost before we start, with no surprise fees.

Questions to ask before you hire anyone for a key

  • Will you come to where my car is parked?
  • Can you give me the total cost before you start?
  • Will the key be cut and programmed on site?
  • Do you work on my make and model?

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a price without calling?
Text us your car’s year, make, and model and we’ll reply during business hours. We ask a few quick questions first, because the price depends on the details above.

Do I need my original key?
Most car keys can be cut and programmed from the vehicle alone, so no original key is needed.

How long does it take?
It depends on the key and the car. We’ll give you an idea when you reach out.

Do you come to me?
